Why is getting fit so difficult?
We all have the same problems - we’re all short of time, we don’t want to waste money on things that don’t work, and there are so many systems available all claiming to be the best. So how do you find out how to get fit quickly without wasting time and money on things that don’t work?
That’s where I come in. Let me introduce myself. My name is Rob Knowles. I used to be a sedentary office dweller. In fact, I still spend most of my working life staring at a computer screen.
A few years ago I started travelling for the companies I worked for - staying in hotels, eating nice dinners, and doing nothing more strenuous every day than sitting in boring meetings all day talking. I don’t expect your sympathy - I know it was a great life! However, it was really bad for my waistline. Even when I started doing some exercise I still ended up 30 pounds overweight.
I tried going to the gym, but I found it intimidating being surrounded by all those toned, slim, tanned gym bunnies, so I didn’t go very often. That made the monthly membership fee REALLY expensive, when most months I only visited the place once or maybe twice. What a waste of money!
After quite a long process I got into running. I hated all forms of sports at school (think of the fat kid who was always second to last in everything, and you know me). But I started to like running.
- I liked being able to run on my own without anyone seeing me puffing and panting.
- I enjoyed spending time outside when I wasn’t rushing somewhere, so I could actually see some of it.
- Most of all I liked the feeling of getting fit and losing weight running. You will be amazed at how quickly you can actually improve your fitness.
It wasn’t all a walk (or run!) in the park, however. Since I just started out on my own I made a number of mistakes. Minor injuries from trying to make progress too fast, or from trying to make do with one long run a week instead of several shorter ones. Suffering from trying to run in the wrong shoes. And many other minor setbacks along the way.
Eventually I started to find the right way to get fit. Then I started to read some books and papers in scientific journals (I should say that I am a qualified scientist). As a result I found out a lot about how to make better progress, and where I’d been going wrong in the past. If only I’d found this out before!
Now I’ve got to the stage where:
- My weight is in the middle of the ideal range using the Body Mass Index. And I don’t believe in dieting. I eat pretty much what I like. I drink alcohol most days. I can even eat in a restaurant without worrying which dish will have the least calories!
- My resting pulse is in the low 50s per minute. Low is better - Olympic athletes normally have a resting pulse in the 40s, normal people my age are in the range 60-80, unhealthy ones up to 100.
- I regularly run up to 35 miles per week. I don’t do it to get fit. I run because I enjoy it. Once you train your mind not to think of exercise as torture, you can start enjoying it, honestly!
- I feel more healthy than I can remember feeling. I can’t describe how good it feels not to get out of breath at the slightest exertion, to have a few muscles where once there was just fat, and to feel healthy.
